Braces<\/a> are the standard way to straighten teeth because they have such a long history of success. If your child is embarrassed by crooked teeth or has a hard time keeping them clean, you might be considering this treatment. However, your youth or teen might hesitate to move forward if they\u2019ve heard horror stories or are unsure what to expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditional orthodontics rely on metal brackets bonded to your child\u2019s teeth that are threaded with an arch wire. This can be adjusted to exert pressure that gradually shifts their grin over a designated period. Although it\u2019s a great way to realign their smile, there are a few common concerns that many patients experience. Issue #1: Gum Disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This condition occurs when bacteria are able to form plaque along your gumline. If the connective tissue is penetrated, it can become infected. If your child notices their gums look darker, puffier, or bleed when they brush or floss, then they may already have gingivitis, which is the earliest stage. If left unaddressed, it can progress into periodontitis which can cause receding gumlines and even tooth loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, your child is at an increased risk of gum disease with braces because it can be challenging to thoroughly floss their teeth around the brackets. If they\u2019re struggling, you might try purchasing floss threaders or special floss picks that can reach between the tight spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Issue #2: Cavities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thoroughly (but gently) scrubbing all surfaces of your child\u2019s teeth twice daily is an essential component of their at-home dental hygiene routine. However, kids with braces may struggle with this step because their toothbrush isn\u2019t built to work around the metal. Thankfully, it\u2019s not difficult to find special interdental brushes that are specifically designed to maneuver around tight corners and grooves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Issue #3: Lacerated Tissues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The sharp corners and ends of the metal brackets and wires in your child\u2019s mouth are notorious for poking the tender tissues of their gums and the insides of their lips and cheeks. This can be so irritating that it becomes uncomfortable to perform basic tasks, like speaking or eating. If your little one is hurting because of cuts or sores, you can apply a small amount of orthodontic wax over their braces to smooth the surface. This protects the insides of their mouth without interfering with the movement of their teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
